It’s no secret that book and ebook publishers are having to deal with a lot of change. Around 2013, we started seeing reports that ebook sales were declining. In 2015, common wisdom seemed to be that if digital book sales weren’t declining, they had at least flattened.
And now, in 2016, industry experts are starting to ask if the e-book reader is about to stage a comeback. Add to that consolidations such as Hachette acquiring Perseus and Follett buying Baker & Taylor, and one thing becomes clear: To thrive, publishers have got to change with the times.
But it’s not just ebook publishers that need to embrace change. Their ebook software providers need to as well. Distribution software alone, for example, is no longer enough. Publishers need quick and convenient access to all sorts of data, and they need to know what to do with it.
Most ebook distribution platforms show you industry standard, monthly sales reports—title, copies sold, retailer and amount of revenue generated. Some may even go a bit further and break the numbers out into graphs showing how many titles were sold per retailer, but the fact remains: that is all very static information.
What if you want to know more? What if you want to know how many biographies you sold on Amazon? What if you wanted to drill down further and see in which territories and countries those orders for biographies on Amazon originated from? And once you have that data, what do you do with it?
These are the kinds of questions we at Vearsa are always asking ourselves, and we've come up to some exciting conclusions.
The first was that if we were going to be more than an eBook distributor, we needed a new name. As much as we loved ePubDirect, it was a bit specific and didn’t capture the breadth of what we can do for publishers. Vearsa does. It’s the Irish word for oral storytelling, the traditional way of passing down stories. And the story, as we see it, is that today’s digital publishers need a cutting-edge technology company working to solve their most pressing issues. Vearsa is that company.
And to prove it, we’ve rolled out two new products—Vearsa Analytics and Tracker. Analytics takes all your sales data and gives you actionable insights in one easy-to-read dashboard. You’ll see daily and monthly sales, with numerous filtering options—channel, territory, title and more. You’ll see what you need to do to grow your eBook revenue, and spend a lot less time on the day-to-day tasks of sales reporting.
With Tracker, you can monitor print and online data in one place, optimize your pricing and metadata, reduce lost revenue opportunities, and eliminate gut-based decision-making. Combine Analytics and Tracker with Distribution, and you’ve got a powerful way to grow your business with data-driven insights.
You’ll see which marketing and promotion efforts are actually paying off, what territories and retailers you should be focusing on and what titles from your backlist to promote. And that’s just for starters.
Change. It’s not something to be feared. It’s exciting, an adventure. We’d love to share it with you.
